I was subbing for fourth graders for a couple weeks last month, and I noticed how on their spelling tests many of them had spelled 'stone' correctly, but spelled 'blown' as 'blone.' I made this word sort with -one and -own words for them after that so they would compare and contrast words that end with the same letters but have different phonetic endings and vice versa. Some of the students categorized them the way I was expecting/hoping, but some surprised me by sorting the words into groups of 3-, 4-, and 5-letter words instead of having anything to do with language!
