For more than 20 years, I have been creating content for print, broadcast, and digital publication. Three core beliefs make their way into all my work:

  • Be honest.

  • Be kind.

  • Be consistent.

Trust is necessary for good communication, and trust is fostered by honesty. This is a lesson from my days as a journalist and broadcast news producer. I wish being kind came more naturally but -- early in my career -- it was a lesson I had to learn repeatedly: it's more important to be kind than clever. Just because we can think of something really witty or funny to write or say, doesn't mean we should. Finally, when effort is made consistently, work improves. I'm happiest when I'm working hard toward a challenging goal or deadline, knowing every day is a chance to get better.

I hope to carry these core beliefs into public schools. The MS in Teaching, Learning, and Leadership at Oklahoma State is teaching me so much about how humans acquire knowledge and how to teach humans to apply their knowledge. My program focuses on Reading and Literacy. For more on my philosophy about literacy instruction, check out my blog. Expected graduation: Summer 2023.
